Email firstname.lastname@example.org to order. Cards are $12 each and include an audio CD with 12-16 minutes of music and meditation. In your email, please provide your mailing address and specify which card(s) you’d like and how many. I’ll send back a confirmation with the total cost of your order, including shipping, and will let you know how to pay by check or credit card. Please note, if you plan to send the cards through the postal service, I recommend a hard card mailer. I offer one that is custom-sized to fit the cards for $1 each, however any photo-type mailer will suffice.
What do you say when you don’t know what to say? In times of challenge, loss, grief or transition, we often find ourselves without adequate words to comfort or support someone we care about. And even in times of great joy, hope, or gratitude, words alone simply cannot express all that we feel.
Cards by Studio-Lu offer meaningful words of support but also tap into the senses— sight, sound, touch— for when words alone are not enough. In a world where so much is now made digitally or ‘virtually’ or offered with the click of button rather than conveyed by hand, I hope that these cards offer a counterpoint of human touch, a personal gift of support and comfort to those who receive them.
The cards feature:
- Beautifully textured, vibrantly colored paper.
- Nature photographs by Wisconsin “prose photographer” J. Marion Brown that evoke a sense of story, place and emotion.
- An audio CD with 12-16 minutes of audio, amongst three tracks: a song, a spoken-word meditation, and an instrumental. The song on each card, written and performed by Lucy Mathews Heegaard, creates the theme around which the meditation and music are centered.
- Lyrics to the song and an excerpt from the meditation, printed on heavy card stock and tucked inside.
- Blank space for adding your own personal note, just like a traditional greeting card.
- Measuring 5.5″ x 8″, each card is a hand-numbered, limited edition print.
The meditations on each card were created by collaborators Barbara Arney, Eloise Erasmus and Barbara McAfee, who each bring unique perspective, experience and creative energy to the cards. They each wrote their respective meditations specifically to be a companion to the song on the card in which they are featured, thus adding depth to the messages of support offered.
Every detail of the cards was chosen to enhance the comfort and support they offer— from the environmentally-friendly recycled papers, to the way the weight of the card-stock feels in your hands, to the embossed details that invite touch, to the audio CD that can be used again and again for relaxation and comfort.
A N G E L S The featured song in this card, “Where the Angels Live,” touches themes of comfort, support, hope, love and peace. The image, “Winter’s Love Sonnet” by J. Marion Brown, coupled with the soft periwinkle color create a soothing visual combination. While many find this song to be solace in times of grief, the underlying message extends well beyond the terrain of loss. It serves as a reminder that we each have all the love we need as near as our own heartbeat and breath. The meditation by Barbara McAfee is an uplifting affirmation of life. The instrumental by acclaimed Twin Cities’ guitarist Dean Magraw is a delicious treat. The message inside the card is: “where the angels live.”
J U S T B R E A T H E The vibrant pink color of the card coupled with the image of the Dahlia in bloom, titled “Awaken” by photographer J. Marion Brown, invite you to draw in a deep breath before you even have a chance to think. The song “Just Breathe” covers themes of courage, faith, purpose, support and transcendence. The meditation by Eloise Erasmus encourages calm and steady focus on the wisdom and comfort within that help us realize our true purpose. The instrumental, layers Barbara McAfee’s humming voice into a multi-tracked vocal collage that encourages breath and allows pause for peace and relaxation. The message inside the card is: “just breathe.”
W O R D S U N S P O K E N Featuring themes of support, connection, giving, receiving and love, this card is about the friendships in life that sustain us. The cover photograph by J. Marion Brown, titled “Interlude,” calls to mind the quiet moments shared with a good friend, listening and being heard. The song “Words Unspoken” narrates the story of a friendship as it evolves over the course of a lifetime. The meditation by Barbara Arney reflects on the power of friendship to nurture and heal and reminds us that even when separated from a dear friend by time or distance, an enduring friendship offers a deep well of support always available to us. Barbara McAfee’s gentle and relaxing piano instrumental gives space to contemplate the friendships for which we are grateful. The message inside is: “a friend so rare.”
